surah-al-fatiha

Surah Al-Fatiha is the opening chapter of the Holy Quran and the most recited surah in a Muslim’s life. In this article, we share the complete Surah Al-Fatiha English translation, transliteration, and tafseer, and show you how to study its deep meanings verse by verse.

About Surah Al-Fatiha

Surah Al-Fatiha (Arabic: الفاتحة, al-Fātiḥah), meaning “The Opening” or “The Opener,” is the first surah of the Holy Quran. Although it is one of the shortest chapters, containing just seven verses, it is among the most important. It is recited in every unit of every prayer and is therefore known as Umm al-Kitab (the Mother of the Book) and Sab’ul-Mathani (the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses).

The surah is a complete summary of the Quran’s message. It begins in the name of Allah, praises Him as the Lord of all the worlds, acknowledges His mercy and His sovereignty over the Day of Judgment, dedicates all worship to Him alone, and finally asks Him for guidance upon the Straight Path. In just seven short verses lies the essence of faith, worship, and daily supplication.

Surah Al-Fatiha Tafseer — Four Tafsir for Every Verse

Translation gives us the literal meaning of the words, but tafseer opens the door to their deeper wisdom and context. On Quranever, every single verse of Surah Al-Fatiha is accompanied by four major tafsir that you can read side by side:

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (by Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Tafseer Ibn Kathir
  • Tafseer Ala-Madudi
  • Shaheen International

Consider the fifth verse as an example. On the page for Surah Al-Fatiha verse 5 — “We worship You alone, and beg You alone for help” — all four of these tafsir are gathered in one place. The commentary explains that the phrase “we worship” is deliberately plural, highlighting the collective nature of prayer and encouraging believers to offer the obligatory prayers in congregation. It also clarifies why worship and seeking help are mentioned separately: worship must be directed to Allah alone, while help may be sought through the permitted means He has provided, always understanding that these are merely a means and that the true Helper is Allah Himself.

The verse is also presented in two well-known translations, the Kanzul Imaan translation and the Saheeh International translation, so you can compare renderings and gain a richer understanding of the meaning.

Key Themes of Surah Al-Fatiha

  • Tawhid (Oneness of Allah): All praise, worship, and help belong to Allah alone.
  • Mercy: The repeated names Ar-Rahman and Ar-Raheem remind us of Allah’s boundless mercy.
  • The Hereafter: “Master of the Day of Requital” establishes accountability and the reality of the Day of Judgment.
  • Guidance: The heart of the surah is the prayer to be guided upon the Straight Path.

Surah Al-Fatiha is the prayer of every Muslim, repeated at least seventeen times a day in the five daily prayers. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described it as the greatest surah of the Quran, saying that no similar chapter exists in the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, or the Quran itself. It is a complete lesson in faith: begin with Allah’s name, praise Him as the Lord of all worlds, recognize His mercy and His mastery over the Day of Judgment, worship Him alone, seek His help, and pray for the straight path of those He has favored. May Allah grant us all the understanding to live by its message. Ameen.
