Commentary of Surah Al-Anfal – Verse 14

"So taste it [30], and know that for the disbelievers is the punishment of the Fire."

[30] Worldly Defeat and Eternal Punishment

The phrase “So taste it” refers to the defeat suffered by the disbelievers at Badr. Two key points are drawn here:

  1. This worldly punishment does not reduce their punishment in the Hereafter; it is in addition to it.

  2. Compared to the torment of Hell, worldly punishment is light, which is why Allah uses the term “taste”, indicating its relative insignificance.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Al-Anfal verse 14 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Anfal ayat 11 which provides the complete commentary from verse 11 through 14.

(8:14) That is your punishment (from Allah). So taste this punishment,[12] and know that for the unbelievers is the punishment of the Fire.

Ala-Maududi

(8:14) That is your punishment (from Allah). So taste this punishment,[12] and know that for the unbelievers is the punishment of the Fire.

12. Here the discourse is suddenly directed to the unbelievers who we mentioned in (Surah Al-Anfal, ayat 13) as deserving of God’s punishment.

(14) "That [is yours], so taste it." And indeed for the disbelievers is the punishment of the Fire.
