Commentary of Verse 3 (Surah Al-Muzzammil)

“Half of it, or a little less.”

Flexible Duration for Night Worship [3]

Allah (اللَّهُ ) gives a flexible command regarding the duration of Qiyam al-Lail:

• Spend half the night in worship,

• Or a little less,

• Or even a little more — as explained in the next verse.

👉 The decision is left to the Prophet ﷺ and the believers — according to their strength and ability.

Importance of Salatul Tahajjud

This verse points to the value of Tahajjud prayer, which should be performed with sincerity and passion.

• The number of raka'ats is not fixed — one can choose how much to pray.

• Minimum: 2 raka’ats

• Recommended: 8 to 12 raka’ats

🔴 It is important to remember:
At the beginning of Islam, Tahajjud was made Wajib (compulsory) for the Prophet ﷺ and some early companions. Later, it became optional but highly recommended (Sunnah Mu’akkadah) for the rest of the Ummah.
