53. That He may make what the devil casts forth a trial [115] for those in whose hearts is a disease and whose hearts are hardened. And indeed the oppressors and quarrelsome [116] to the end.. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(53) [That is] so He may make what Satan throws in [i.e., asserts] a trial for those within whose hearts is disease[934] and those hard of heart. And indeed, the wrongdoers are in extreme dissension. (Saheeh International Translation)

Commentary of Surah Al-Hajj – Verse 53

"That He may make what the devil casts forth a trial [115] for those in whose hearts is a disease and whose hearts are hardened. And undoubtedly the oppressors and quarrelsome [116] to the end.."

[115] A Trial for the Spiritually Ill

  • The satanic insertion becomes a test for those with diseased or hardened hearts—such as hypocrites, deniers, or those seeking confusion.

  • Those with such internal corruption are easily misled, as their hearts are not open to divine truth.

[116] Condition of the Oppressors

  • Such people are described as quarrelsome and unjust—always opposing truth through arguments and rebellion.

  • Their reaction to the trial exposes their true nature, sealing their fate.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Al-Hajj verse 53 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Hajj ayat 52 which provides the complete commentary from verse 52 through 54.

(22:53) (He does this) in order that He may make the evil caused by Satan a trial for those in whose hearts there is sickness (of hypocrisy), whose hearts are hard (and vitiated). Surely these wrong-doers have gone too far in their dissension.

Ala-Maududi

(22:53) (He does this) in order that He may make the evil caused by Satan a trial for those in whose hearts there is sickness (of hypocrisy), whose hearts are hard (and vitiated). Surely these wrong-doers have gone too far in their dissension.
