Surah At-Tawbah, meaning "Repentance," is the 9th chapter of the Quran, comprising 129 verses revealed in Medina. It is also referred to as Bara'at, meaning "Repudiation," as its opening lines announce the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) disavowal of those who reject faith.

  10. Sadaqah purifies wealth and the soul.
  11. Do not seek forgiveness for those who have died in disbelief.
  12. Keep company with the pious.
  13. Striving in the path of Allah yields immense rewards.
  14. Seeking knowledge and teaching is vital; even in times of crisis, a group should remain to learn and teach others upon their return.
  15. The Prophet (peace be upon him) cared deeply for the Muslims, grieved at their difficulties, and wished for their well-being with immense love and mercy.

Surely, a (Glorious) Messenger from amongst yourselves has come to you. Your suffering and distress (become) grievously heavy on him (blessings and peace be upon him). (O mankind,) he is ardently desirous of your (betterment and guidance) and he is most (deeply) clement and merciful to the believers.

بَرَآءَةٞ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ عَٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ

Baraaa'atum minal laahi wa Rasooliheee ilal lazeena 'aahattum minal mushrikeen
1. (Voici) la proclamation de désengagement[201] d’Allah et de Son Messager (dénonçant) le pacte que vous avez conclu avec les associâtres.

Verset 2 sur 10

فَسِيحُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَرۡبَعَةَ أَشۡهُرٖ وَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّكُمۡ غَيۡرُ مُعۡجِزِي ٱللَّهِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡزِي ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ,

Faseehoo fil ardi arba'ata ashhurinw wa'lamoooannakum ghairu mu'jizil laahi wa annal laaha mukhzil kaafireen
2. (À ces derniers Nous disons) : « Allez de par le pays pendant quatre mois et sachez que vous ne saurez mettre au défi la puissance d’Allah, et Allah couvre d’opprobre les mécréants. »

وَأَذَٰنٞ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡحَجِّ ٱلۡأَكۡبَرِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَرِيٓءٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ وَرَسُولُهُۥۚ فَإِن تُبۡتُمۡ فَهُوَ خَيۡرٞ لَّكُمۡۖ وَإِن تَوَلَّيۡتُمۡ فَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّكُمۡ غَيۡرُ مُعۡجِزِي ٱللَّهِۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ,

Wa azaanum minal laahi wa Rasooliheee ilan naasi yawmal Hajjil Akbari annal laaha bareee'um minal mushrikeena wa Rasooluh; fa-in tubtum fahuwa khairullakum wa in tawallaitum fa'lamooo annakum ghairu mu'jizil laah; wa bashiril lazeena kafaroo biazaabin aleem
3. (Voici) une annonce, pour le jour du Grand Pèlerinage, adressée aux hommes de la part d’Allah et de Son Messager : Allah et Son Messager sont libres de tout engagement vis-à-vis des associâtres. Si vous vous repentez, cela vaudra mieux pour vous, et si vous vous détournez (de la foi), sachez que vous ne saurez mettre au défi la puissance d’Allah. À ceux qui n’ont pas cru, annonce un très douloureux supplice.

Verset 4 sur 10

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ ثُمَّ لَمۡ يَنقُصُوكُمۡ شَيۡـٔٗا وَلَمۡ يُظَٰهِرُواْ عَلَيۡكُمۡ أَحَدٗا فَأَتِمُّوٓاْ إِلَيۡهِمۡ عَهۡدَهُمۡ إِلَىٰ مُدَّتِهِمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ,

Illal lazeena 'aahattum minal mushrikeena summa lam yanqusookum shai'anw-wa lam yuzaahiroo 'alaikum ahadan fa atimmooo ilaihim 'ahdahum ilaa muddatihim; innal laaha yuhibbul muttaqeen
4. Exception sera faite de ceux qui, d’entre les associâtres, vous sont liés par un pacte auquel ils n’ont en rien failli, et qui n’ont prêté soutien à personne contre vous. Respectez donc leur pacte jusqu’à son terme, car Allah aime ceux qui Le craignent.

فَإِذَا ٱنسَلَخَ ٱلۡأَشۡهُرُ ٱلۡحُرُمُ فَٱقۡتُلُواْ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ حَيۡثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمۡ وَخُذُوهُمۡ وَٱحۡصُرُوهُمۡ وَٱقۡعُدُواْ لَهُمۡ كُلَّ مَرۡصَدٖۚ فَإِن تَابُواْ وَأَقَامُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُاْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَخَلُّواْ سَبِيلَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞ,

Fa izansalakhal Ashhurul Hurumu faqtulul mushrikeena haisu wajattumoohum wa khuzoohum wahsuroohum waq'udoo lahum kulla marsad; fa-in taaboo wa aqaamus Salaata wa aatawuz Zakaata fakhalloo sabeelahum; innal laaha Ghafoorur Raheem
5. Aussitôt qu’expirent les mois sacrés,[202] tuez les associâtres là où vous les trouverez. Appréhendez-les, assiégez-les et soyez à l’affût, et dressez-leur toutes sortes d’embuscades. Et s’ils se repentent, observent la Çalât et s’acquittent de la Zakât, alors laissez-les en paix, car Allah est Absoluteur et Tout Miséricordieux.

Verset 6 sur 10

وَإِنۡ أَحَدٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ ٱسۡتَجَارَكَ فَأَجِرۡهُ حَتَّىٰ يَسۡمَعَ كَلَٰمَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ أَبۡلِغۡهُ مَأۡمَنَهُۥۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمٞ لَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ,

Wa in ahadum minal mushrikeenas tajaaraka fa ajirhu hattaa yasma'a Kalaamal laahi summa ablighhu maa manah; zaalika bi annahum qawmul laa ya'lamoon
6. Et si l’un des associâtres te demande protection, tu la lui accorderas, afin qu’il entende (chez toi) la Parole d’Allah. Puis tu le feras conduire là où il se sentira en sécurité. C’est que ce sont des gens qui ne savent pas.

كَيۡفَ يَكُونُ لِلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ عَهۡدٌ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعِندَ رَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَٰهَدتُّمۡ عِندَ ٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ ٱلۡحَرَامِۖ فَمَا ٱسۡتَقَٰمُواْ لَكُمۡ فَٱسۡتَقِيمُواْ لَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ,

Kaifa yakoonu lilmush rikeena 'ahdun 'indallaahi wa 'inda Rasoolihee illal lazeena 'aahattum 'indal Masjidil Haraami famas taqaamoo lakum fastaqeemoo lahum; innallaaha yuhibbul muttaqeen
7. Comment les associâtres peuvent-ils bénéficier d’un pacte les liant avec Allah et Son Messager, excepté ceux avec qui vous vous êtes engagés près de la Mosquée Sacrée ? Tant qu’ils se conduiront avec droiture à votre égard, conduisez-vous avec droiture à leur égard, car Allah aime ceux qui Le craignent.

Verset 8 sur 10

كَيۡفَ وَإِن يَظۡهَرُواْ عَلَيۡكُمۡ لَا يَرۡقُبُواْ فِيكُمۡ إِلّٗا وَلَا ذِمَّةٗۚ يُرۡضُونَكُم بِأَفۡوَٰهِهِمۡ وَتَأۡبَىٰ قُلُوبُهُمۡ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ فَٰسِقُونَ,

Kaifa wa iny-yazharoo 'alaikum laa yarquboo feekum illanw wa laa zimmah; yurdoo nakum biafwaahihim wa ta'baa quloobuhum wa aksaruhum faasiqoon
8. Et comment (pourrait-il en être ainsi) alors que s’ils prenaient le dessus sur vous, ils ne respecteraient ni les liens du sang ni n’honoreraient leur engagement à votre égard. Tandis que du bout des lèvres ils s’emploient à vous faire plaisir, leurs cœurs s’obstinent à (vous) refuser (une telle faveur). La plupart d’entre eux sont des pervers.

ٱشۡتَرَوۡاْ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ثَمَنٗا قَلِيلٗا فَصَدُّواْ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦٓۚ إِنَّهُمۡ سَآءَ مَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ,

Ishtaraw bi Aayaatil laahi samanan qaleelan fasaddoo 'an sabeelih; innahum saaa'a maa kaanoo ya'maloon
9. Ils vendent à bas prix les versets d’Allah et dressent des obstacles sur Son chemin. Combien mauvais est ce qu’ils font !

لَا يَرۡقُبُونَ فِي مُؤۡمِنٍ إِلّٗا وَلَا ذِمَّةٗۚ وَأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُعۡتَدُونَ,

Laa yarquboona fee mu'minin illanw wa laa zimmah wa ulaaa 'ika humulmu 'tadoon
10. Ils ne respectent, vis-à-vis d’un croyant, ni liens du sang ni engagement. Ceux-là sont les transgresseurs.

Known as "The Immunity," Surah At-Tawbah is the 9th chapter of the Glorious Quran. It contains 129 ayat (verses) and was revealed in Medina after the Prophet (ﷺ) migrated there. This surah consists of two juz (parts). Verses 1 through 92 are in the 10th juz, and verses 93 to 129 are in the 11th juz.

This surah continues from the previous one, as it begins by calling an end to the numerous peace treaties broken by the pagans. The believers are encouraged to join the Prophet (ﷺ) in marching to Tabuk for battle during the summer of 9 A.H. / 631 C.E., and hypocrites—who make spurious excuses—are uncovered and refuted. Muslims are reminded of Allah's protection at the Battle of Uhud, when their defeat turned into a successful victory, as well as how He shielded His Messenger (ﷺ) during his journey to Medina. Throughout this surah, Allah's tolerance for repentance is continually emphasized, hence its title.
