Surah At-Tawbah, meaning "Repentance," is the 9th chapter of the Quran, comprising 129 verses revealed in Medina. It is also referred to as Bara'at, meaning "Repudiation," as its opening lines announce the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) disavowal of those who reject faith.

  1. Honor your treaties.
  2. Populating mosques is a sign of faith.

  15. The Prophet (peace be upon him) cared deeply for the Muslims, grieved at their difficulties, and wished for their well-being with immense love and mercy.

بَرَآءَةٞ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ عَٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ

Baraaa'atum minal laahi wa Rasooliheee ilal lazeena 'aahattum minal mushrikeen
(Inilah pernyataan) pemutusan hubungan dari Allah dan Rasul-Nya kepada orang-orang musyrik yang kamu telah mengadakan perjanjian (dengan mereka).

Ayat 2 dari 10

فَسِيحُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَرۡبَعَةَ أَشۡهُرٖ وَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّكُمۡ غَيۡرُ مُعۡجِزِي ٱللَّهِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡزِي ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ,

Faseehoo fil ardi arba'ata ashhurinw wa'lamoooannakum ghairu mu'jizil laahi wa annal laaha mukhzil kaafireen
Maka berjalanlah kamu (kaum musyrikin) di bumi selama empat bulan dan ketahuilah bahwa kamu tidak dapat melemahkan Allah, dan sesungguhnya Allah menghinakan orang-orang kafir.

Ayat 3 dari 10

وَأَذَٰنٞ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡحَجِّ ٱلۡأَكۡبَرِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَرِيٓءٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ وَرَسُولُهُۥۚ فَإِن تُبۡتُمۡ فَهُوَ خَيۡرٞ لَّكُمۡۖ وَإِن تَوَلَّيۡتُمۡ فَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّكُمۡ غَيۡرُ مُعۡجِزِي ٱللَّهِۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ,

Wa azaanum minal laahi wa Rasooliheee ilan naasi yawmal Hajjil Akbari annal laaha bareee'um minal mushrikeena wa Rasooluh; fa-in tubtum fahuwa khairullakum wa in tawallaitum fa'lamooo annakum ghairu mu'jizil laah; wa bashiril lazeena kafaroo biazaabin aleem
Dan satu maklumat (pemberitahuan) dari Allah dan Rasul-Nya kepada umat manusia pada hari haji akbar,369) bahwa sesungguhnya Allah dan Rasul-Nya berlepas diri dari orang-orang musyrik. Kemudian jika kamu (kaum musyrikin) bertobat, maka itu lebih baik bagimu; dan jika kamu berpaling, maka ketahuilah bahwa kamu tidak dapat melemahkan Allah. Dan berilah kabar gembira kepada orang-orang kafir (bahwa mereka akan mendapat) azab yang pedih,

Ayat 4 dari 10

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ ثُمَّ لَمۡ يَنقُصُوكُمۡ شَيۡـٔٗا وَلَمۡ يُظَٰهِرُواْ عَلَيۡكُمۡ أَحَدٗا فَأَتِمُّوٓاْ إِلَيۡهِمۡ عَهۡدَهُمۡ إِلَىٰ مُدَّتِهِمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ,

Illal lazeena 'aahattum minal mushrikeena summa lam yanqusookum shai'anw-wa lam yuzaahiroo 'alaikum ahadan fa atimmooo ilaihim 'ahdahum ilaa muddatihim; innal laaha yuhibbul muttaqeen
kecuali orang-orang musyrik yang telah mengadakan perjanjian dengan kamu dan mereka sedikit pun tidak mengurangi (isi perjanjian) dan mereka tidak (pula) membantu seorang pun yang memusuhi kamu, maka terhadap mereka itu penuhilah janjinya sampai batas waktunya. Sungguh, Allah menyukai orang-orang yang bertakwa.

Ayat 5 dari 10

فَإِذَا ٱنسَلَخَ ٱلۡأَشۡهُرُ ٱلۡحُرُمُ فَٱقۡتُلُواْ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ حَيۡثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمۡ وَخُذُوهُمۡ وَٱحۡصُرُوهُمۡ وَٱقۡعُدُواْ لَهُمۡ كُلَّ مَرۡصَدٖۚ فَإِن تَابُواْ وَأَقَامُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُاْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَخَلُّواْ سَبِيلَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞ,

Fa izansalakhal Ashhurul Hurumu faqtulul mushrikeena haisu wajattumoohum wa khuzoohum wahsuroohum waq'udoo lahum kulla marsad; fa-in taaboo wa aqaamus Salaata wa aatawuz Zakaata fakhalloo sabeelahum; innal laaha Ghafoorur Raheem
Apabila telah habis bulan-bulan haram,370) maka perangilah orang-orang musyrik di mana saja kamu temui, tangkaplah dan kepunglah mereka, dan awasilah di tempat pengintaian. Jika mereka bertobat dan melaksanakan salat serta menunaikan zakat, maka berilah kebebasan kepada mereka. Sungguh, Allah Maha Pengampun, Maha Penyayang.

Ayat 6 dari 10

وَإِنۡ أَحَدٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ ٱسۡتَجَارَكَ فَأَجِرۡهُ حَتَّىٰ يَسۡمَعَ كَلَٰمَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ أَبۡلِغۡهُ مَأۡمَنَهُۥۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمٞ لَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ,

Wa in ahadum minal mushrikeenas tajaaraka fa ajirhu hattaa yasma'a Kalaamal laahi summa ablighhu maa manah; zaalika bi annahum qawmul laa ya'lamoon
Dan jika di antara kaum musyrikin ada yang meminta perlindungan kepadamu, maka lindungilah agar dia dapat mendengar firman Allah, kemudian antarkanlah dia ke tempat yang aman baginya. (Demikian) itu karena sesungguhnya mereka kaum yang tidak mengetahui.

Ayat 7 dari 10

كَيۡفَ يَكُونُ لِلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ عَهۡدٌ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعِندَ رَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَٰهَدتُّمۡ عِندَ ٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ ٱلۡحَرَامِۖ فَمَا ٱسۡتَقَٰمُواْ لَكُمۡ فَٱسۡتَقِيمُواْ لَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ,

Kaifa yakoonu lilmush rikeena 'ahdun 'indallaahi wa 'inda Rasoolihee illal lazeena 'aahattum 'indal Masjidil Haraami famas taqaamoo lakum fastaqeemoo lahum; innallaaha yuhibbul muttaqeen
Bagaimana mungkin ada perjanjian (aman) di sisi Allah dan Rasul-Nya dengan orang-orang musyrik, kecuali dengan orang-orang yang kamu telah mengadakan perjanjian (dengan mereka) di dekat Masjidilharam (Hudaibiyah), maka selama mereka berlaku jujur terhadapmu, hendaklah kamu berlaku jujur (pula) terhadap mereka. Sungguh, Allah menyukai orang-orang yang bertakwa.

Ayat 8 dari 10

كَيۡفَ وَإِن يَظۡهَرُواْ عَلَيۡكُمۡ لَا يَرۡقُبُواْ فِيكُمۡ إِلّٗا وَلَا ذِمَّةٗۚ يُرۡضُونَكُم بِأَفۡوَٰهِهِمۡ وَتَأۡبَىٰ قُلُوبُهُمۡ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ فَٰسِقُونَ,

Kaifa wa iny-yazharoo 'alaikum laa yarquboo feekum illanw wa laa zimmah; yurdoo nakum biafwaahihim wa ta'baa quloobuhum wa aksaruhum faasiqoon
Bagaimana mungkin (ada perjanjian demikian), padahal jika mereka memperoleh kemenangan atas kamu, mereka tidak memelihara hubungan kekerabatan denganmu dan tidak (pula mengindahkan) perjanjian. Mereka menyenangkan hatimu dengan mulutnya, sedang hatinya menolak. Kebanyakan mereka adalah orang-orang fasik (tidak menepati janji).

Ayat 9 dari 10

ٱشۡتَرَوۡاْ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ثَمَنٗا قَلِيلٗا فَصَدُّواْ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦٓۚ إِنَّهُمۡ سَآءَ مَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ,

Ishtaraw bi Aayaatil laahi samanan qaleelan fasaddoo 'an sabeelih; innahum saaa'a maa kaanoo ya'maloon
Mereka memperjualbelikan ayat-ayat Allah dengan harga murah, lalu mereka menghalang-halangi (orang) dari jalan Allah. Sungguh, betapa buruknya apa yang mereka kerjakan.

Ayat 10 dari 10

لَا يَرۡقُبُونَ فِي مُؤۡمِنٍ إِلّٗا وَلَا ذِمَّةٗۚ وَأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُعۡتَدُونَ,

Laa yarquboona fee mu'minin illanw wa laa zimmah wa ulaaa 'ika humulmu 'tadoon
Mereka tidak memelihara (hubungan) kekerabatan dengan orang mukmin dan tidak (pula mengindahkan) perjanjian. Dan mereka itulah orang-orang yang melampaui batas.

Known as "The Immunity," Surah At-Tawbah is the 9th chapter of the Glorious Quran. It contains 129 ayat (verses) and was revealed in Medina after the Prophet (ﷺ) migrated there. This surah consists of two juz (parts). Verses 1 through 92 are in the 10th juz, and verses 93 to 129 are in the 11th juz.

This surah continues from the previous one, as it begins by calling an end to the numerous peace treaties broken by the pagans. The believers are encouraged to join the Prophet (ﷺ) in marching to Tabuk for battle during the summer of 9 A.H. / 631 C.E., and hypocrites—who make spurious excuses—are uncovered and refuted. Muslims are reminded of Allah's protection at the Battle of Uhud, when their defeat turned into a successful victory, as well as how He shielded His Messenger (ﷺ) during his journey to Medina. Throughout this surah, Allah's tolerance for repentance is continually emphasized, hence its title.
