Surah At-Tawbah, meaning "Repentance," is the 9th chapter of the Quran, comprising 129 verses revealed in Medina. It is also referred to as Bara'at, meaning "Repudiation," as its opening lines announce the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) disavowal of those who reject faith.

  10. Sadaqah purifies wealth and the soul.
  11. Do not seek forgiveness for those who have died in disbelief.
  12. Keep company with the pious.
  13. Striving in the path of Allah yields immense rewards.
  14. Seeking knowledge and teaching is vital; even in times of crisis, a group should remain to learn and teach others upon their return.
  15. The Prophet (peace be upon him) cared deeply for the Muslims, grieved at their difficulties, and wished for their well-being with immense love and mercy.

  1. Reciting this surah protects against hypocrisy.
  2. Writing Surah At-Tawbah and keeping it close offers safety from theft and protection from misfortune in times of fire.

Surely, a (Glorious) Messenger from amongst yourselves has come to you. Your suffering and distress (become) grievously heavy on him (blessings and peace be upon him). (O mankind,) he is ardently desirous of your (betterment and guidance) and he is most (deeply) clement and merciful to the believers.

بَرَآءَةٞ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ عَٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ

Baraaa'atum minal laahi wa Rasooliheee ilal lazeena 'aahattum minal mushrikeen

فَسِيحُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ أَرۡبَعَةَ أَشۡهُرٖ وَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّكُمۡ غَيۡرُ مُعۡجِزِي ٱللَّهِ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡزِي ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ,

Faseehoo fil ardi arba'ata ashhurinw wa'lamoooannakum ghairu mu'jizil laahi wa annal laaha mukhzil kaafireen
2. Podéis transitar (seguros) por la tierra durante cuatro meses (¡oh, idólatras!, antes de que queden anulados vuestros pactos con los creyentes), y sabed que no podréis escaparos de Al-lah y que Al-lah humillará a quienes rechazan la verdad.

وَأَذَٰنٞ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡحَجِّ ٱلۡأَكۡبَرِ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَرِيٓءٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ وَرَسُولُهُۥۚ فَإِن تُبۡتُمۡ فَهُوَ خَيۡرٞ لَّكُمۡۖ وَإِن تَوَلَّيۡتُمۡ فَٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّكُمۡ غَيۡرُ مُعۡجِزِي ٱللَّهِۗ وَبَشِّرِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ,

Wa azaanum minal laahi wa Rasooliheee ilan naasi yawmal Hajjil Akbari annal laaha bareee'um minal mushrikeena wa Rasooluh; fa-in tubtum fahuwa khairullakum wa in tawallaitum fa'lamooo annakum ghairu mu'jizil laah; wa bashiril lazeena kafaroo biazaabin aleem
3. Y Al-lah y Su Mensajero proclaman a la gente, el Día del Sacrificio[292], que ambos están exentos de la obligación de cumplir los pactos acordados anteriormente con los idólatras. Si os arrepentís (y aceptáis el islam, ¡oh, idólatras!), serámejor para vosotros; pero si os desentendéis de la fe, sabed que no podréis escaparos de Al-lah. Y anuncia a quienes rechazan la verdad que recibirán un castigo doloroso (en esta vida y en la otra).

إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ ثُمَّ لَمۡ يَنقُصُوكُمۡ شَيۡـٔٗا وَلَمۡ يُظَٰهِرُواْ عَلَيۡكُمۡ أَحَدٗا فَأَتِمُّوٓاْ إِلَيۡهِمۡ عَهۡدَهُمۡ إِلَىٰ مُدَّتِهِمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ,

Illal lazeena 'aahattum minal mushrikeena summa lam yanqusookum shai'anw-wa lam yuzaahiroo 'alaikum ahadan fa atimmooo ilaihim 'ahdahum ilaa muddatihim; innal laaha yuhibbul muttaqeen
4. Mas con aquellos idólatras con quienes pactasteis y no han quebrantado ningún punto del pacto ni han apoyado al enemigo contra vosotros, cumplid lo convenido hasta el final (aunque supere el plazo de cuatro meses). Ciertamente, Al-lah ama a los piadosos (que cumplen sus compromisos).

فَإِذَا ٱنسَلَخَ ٱلۡأَشۡهُرُ ٱلۡحُرُمُ فَٱقۡتُلُواْ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ حَيۡثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمۡ وَخُذُوهُمۡ وَٱحۡصُرُوهُمۡ وَٱقۡعُدُواْ لَهُمۡ كُلَّ مَرۡصَدٖۚ فَإِن تَابُواْ وَأَقَامُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُاْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ فَخَلُّواْ سَبِيلَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞ,

Fa izansalakhal Ashhurul Hurumu faqtulul mushrikeena haisu wajattumoohum wa khuzoohum wahsuroohum waq'udoo lahum kulla marsad; fa-in taaboo wa aqaamus Salaata wa aatawuz Zakaata fakhalloo sabeelahum; innal laaha Ghafoorur Raheem
5. Y una vez transcurridos los cuatro meses de plazo, durante los cuales los idólatras gozaban de seguridad, (anunciad la guerra al enemigo de Al-lah) y matadlos allí donde los encontréis, capturadlos, cercadlos y acechadlos en todo lugar[293]. Pero si se arrepienten (de su incredulidad y aceptan el islam), practican el salat y entregan en azaque[294], dejad que prosigan en paz su camino. Ciertamente, Al-lah es Indulgente y Misericordioso.

وَإِنۡ أَحَدٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ ٱسۡتَجَارَكَ فَأَجِرۡهُ حَتَّىٰ يَسۡمَعَ كَلَٰمَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ أَبۡلِغۡهُ مَأۡمَنَهُۥۚ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمٞ لَّا يَعۡلَمُونَ,

Wa in ahadum minal mushrikeenas tajaaraka fa ajirhu hattaa yasma'a Kalaamal laahi summa ablighhu maa manah; zaalika bi annahum qawmul laa ya'lamoon
6. Y si algún idólatra te pide protección (¡oh, Muhammad!) para escuchar la palabra de Al-lah, concédesela para que la escuche y después facilítale la llegada a un lugar seguro. Esto es porque son gentes que no conocen (la palabra de Al-lah).

كَيۡفَ يَكُونُ لِلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ عَهۡدٌ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعِندَ رَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ عَٰهَدتُّمۡ عِندَ ٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ ٱلۡحَرَامِۖ فَمَا ٱسۡتَقَٰمُواْ لَكُمۡ فَٱسۡتَقِيمُواْ لَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُتَّقِينَ,

Kaifa yakoonu lilmush rikeena 'ahdun 'indallaahi wa 'inda Rasoolihee illal lazeena 'aahattum 'indal Masjidil Haraami famas taqaamoo lakum fastaqeemoo lahum; innallaaha yuhibbul muttaqeen
7. ¡Cómo podrían los idólatras mantener un pacto con Al-lah y con Su Mensajero, a excepción de aquellos con los que establecisteis un acuerdo[295] cerca de la Mezquita Sagrada! Mientras estos cumplan con vosotros, cumplid con ellos. Ciertamente, Al-lah ama a los piadosos que cumplen lo que pactan.

كَيۡفَ وَإِن يَظۡهَرُواْ عَلَيۡكُمۡ لَا يَرۡقُبُواْ فِيكُمۡ إِلّٗا وَلَا ذِمَّةٗۚ يُرۡضُونَكُم بِأَفۡوَٰهِهِمۡ وَتَأۡبَىٰ قُلُوبُهُمۡ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ فَٰسِقُونَ,

Kaifa wa iny-yazharoo 'alaikum laa yarquboo feekum illanw wa laa zimmah; yurdoo nakum biafwaahihim wa ta'baa quloobuhum wa aksaruhum faasiqoon
8. ¡Cómo (podría haber un convenio entre vosotros) si, de venceros, no respetarían ni lazos de sangre ni pacto alguno! Sus palabras os complacen, pero sus corazones os rechazan, y la mayoría de ellos no respetan lo pactado.

ٱشۡتَرَوۡاْ بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ثَمَنٗا قَلِيلٗا فَصَدُّواْ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦٓۚ إِنَّهُمۡ سَآءَ مَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ,

Ishtaraw bi Aayaatil laahi samanan qaleelan fasaddoo 'an sabeelih; innahum saaa'a maa kaanoo ya'maloon
9. Han vendido las aleyas de Al-lah por un vil beneficio (al preferir los bienes mundanales a la verdad) y desvían a los hombres de Su camino. ¡Qué malo es lo que hacen!

لَا يَرۡقُبُونَ فِي مُؤۡمِنٍ إِلّٗا وَلَا ذِمَّةٗۚ وَأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُعۡتَدُونَ,

Laa yarquboona fee mu'minin illanw wa laa zimmah wa ulaaa 'ika humulmu 'tadoon
10. No respetan con ningún creyente ni lazos de sangre ni pacto alguno. Esos son los transgresores.

Known as "The Immunity," Surah At-Tawbah is the 9th chapter of the Glorious Quran. It contains 129 ayat (verses) and was revealed in Medina after the Prophet (ﷺ) migrated there. This surah consists of two juz (parts). Verses 1 through 92 are in the 10th juz, and verses 93 to 129 are in the 11th juz.

This surah continues from the previous one, as it begins by calling an end to the numerous peace treaties broken by the pagans. The believers are encouraged to join the Prophet (ﷺ) in marching to Tabuk for battle during the summer of 9 A.H. / 631 C.E., and hypocrites—who make spurious excuses—are uncovered and refuted. Muslims are reminded of Allah's protection at the Battle of Uhud, when their defeat turned into a successful victory, as well as how He shielded His Messenger (ﷺ) during his journey to Medina. Throughout this surah, Allah's tolerance for repentance is continually emphasized, hence its title.
